Brave new ‘virtual’ world..

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Today I watched an interesting TV report about the virtual world in Korea.

One Korean woman did a pretty good analysis about the behavorial difference of Koreans vs. Europeans. In Europe everybody wants to be seen as an Individual whereas Koreans strive for being rather equal to others. This phenomenon explains why new technology and trends pick up in Korea and also other asian developped countries so much faster than in Europe. In Korea people are watching TV on their mobile phones while driving the subway. This is absolutely normal. This is why the pressure within the society is very hard on the younger generation.

One of the newest technology offered to the public are those cyberglasses that you can wear with build in VGA monitors which allows you to watch TV. The manufacturer wants to reduce the weight down to the weight of a sunglass.

In Korea almost everyone seems to have his own private website. While Europeans make money with advertisement being displaced on high traffic generating sites Korean ISPs make money by providing many graphics that the user can buy for very little money to spice up his own website.

Another thing that striked me was the comparison between Hongkong and the rest of the world. It seems as if a 100 Mbps Broadband Internet access is absolutely normal and available for 20 bucks a month.

The OECD has published some interesting numbers about the broadband penetration around the world. The statistics are based on the number of subscribers per 100 inhabitants and the numbers are quite amazing.

The leading 5 countries are currently:

  1. Denmark
  2. Netherlands
  3. Iceland
  4. Korea
  5. Switzerland

The US is ranked on 12th, France on 16th and Germany on 18th position. For the total overview click here

Selling content

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Some of you have approached me asking me to give an overview about different tools how to sell actual content and increase the awareness of your blog. So I have listed for you some of the most popular services out there that help you in getting your content sold or actually help increase the polularity of your blog.

Feedvertiser

Feedvertiser is a plugin for Wordpress users that allows you to run text link ads in your RSS feed. Ad’s can be generated either by you or any third party that you work with. Problogger and Techcrunch are using this tool too. Just sign up, download the plugin, activate it in Wordpress and you are set! :)>-

Scoopt

Scoopt is a service for those hobby photographers and journalists among you who are making great pictures but just don’t have the guts of driving their sales forward and calling up newspapers and magazines :)] Scoopt is filling this hole. The Membership is free. The submission of the pictures is free of charge too. Scoopt will take care of the actual sales for you. While working with newspapers, magazines, news organisations and other publishers they will try to sell your pictures. For each generated sale they will split (50:50) the amount with you. $-)

JPG Magazine

JPG Magazine has recently started with a new business concept. People can upload their best photographic showcases. The community will vote for the best shots who will make it into their print magazine. The winner will receive $100 plus a free one-year subscription. The founders have initially started out to print on demand via Lulu before they have gone into offset printing.

So what’s behind Lulu?

Lulu.com offers since 2002 as a web’s premier independent publishing company to anybody the possibility of publishing pretty much about anything and everything. Be it CDs, books, paperbacks, hardcover books, brochures.. The print will be done on demand. Lulu.com will participate on each sale generated. You can set your own price, there is no set-up fee. It’s easy as that. Pretty cool B-)

Feel free to suggest any other tools that I may have left out in the comment section :D

Web 2.0 across Asia

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

Since I have travelled quite a bit through Asia this year I was wondering how little in Europe we knew about Web 2.0 developments coming from Asia :-?.So I did a little bit of research to figure out some sites that would give a bit more of an insight. And there it was: the first site I stumbled across was koreacrunch.com which was created in honor to techcrunch.com run by Channy Yun. A friend of him Chang had just recently set-up web20asia.com another site mainly focussed on tracking Korean Web 2.0 companies :)>-. Next Generation web companies coming from China are currently tracked by China Web 2.0 Review. Quihoo, a search engine and supposedly competitor of Google in China has received US$20M in VC funding from Sequoia Capital, CDH Investment and IDG Ventures back in march according to news of the EMPEA. China Web 2.0 Review reported another series B funding of Quihoo back in November raising $45M in funding in only 8 months.

Web 2.0 - A dotcom renaissance?

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

After the Internet bubble had bursted years ago it seemed that people had become more wiser in terms of selling real value against fictive ideas. Now with the Web 2.0 generation it seemed like as if we are experiencing some sort of renaissance and the feeling of gold digger mentality has grown again. No wonder certain Web 2.0 companies have found their way into financing rounds of Venture capital firms again. It seems to be all about how quickly fictive ideas can be implemented, creating a beta product, increasing worldwide awareness while generating first sales and eventually ending up creating solid revenues.
In fact Kiko (an online AJAX calendar application) was recently sold on Ebay for USD$258k. For those of you that are interested here is the link to the auction. It seems as if some of the Web 2.0 founders have learned their lesson while choosing an easy exit. Some seem to be nowadays satisfied with even lower amounts than a 7 figure outcome. The minimum bid was set to 50,000.
