Dating a Korean 101
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009
After being with a Korean guy for so many years I thought it was about time to post a top ten list of things that may help you in dealing with Koreans. This may be of interest to those that are either currently dating a Korean, looking into dating one, or are probably already married to one.
1. Korean men are not very open when it comes to showing their emotional side. Be patient. If he really loves or cares about you he will eventually give in. But take your time and take it one step at a time.
2. Korean moms are great cooks. There is nothing that goes beyond a mothers cooking. Make sure to find out what his favorite dish is and learn how to cook it. A great site for browsing authentic Korean recipes is Maangchi. Make sure to check her out. She is top notch!
3. Make sure to bow when you meet his parents. Its the traditional way of saying ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’ to someone. Shaking hands is out of the question.
4. For Koreans it is always about the bloodline. Marrying a Korean as a Non-Korean may be an issue for some. You need to put an extra effort into it and learn more about the culture and the language to make any barrier slowly disappear.
5. If you meet his parents for the very first time, go to a Korean store and get some herbal tea or any other health related stuff. Koreans are firm believers in self medication and nothing counts more than something that is ‘Made in Korea’!
6. If your mother-in-law talks to you in Korean, take it as a sign that she beliefs that you are still studying the Korean language. She may just test you to check on your progress! Smile, nod and say ‘nee’.
7. For your boyfriends/husbands birthday try to cook Miyuk-Guk, the seaweed soup. He will love you even more for being so thoughtful.
8. If you plan a wedding, be aware that Koreans are not used to celebrate more than 2-3 hours. Be creative to have them stay longer. Get a bilingual MC and try to stretch the dinner or have a pastor say a prayer towards the end.
9. Watch your weight when you are visiting his parents. Korean mothers love to feed you well. Their cooking is great but be firm when you are about to explode. For the love of your husband/boyfriend you wanna make sure to have a perfect body fit.
10. And in case you still have more questions left, you may just want to go ahead and ask a Korean yourself.
My new little gadget: A Panasonic DMC-TZ5K
Saturday, January 3rd, 2009
Hooray! I finally got it. After contemplating with myself which camera to get I heartfully decided to get another Panasonic Lumix. I had an older version and was very happy with it. It lasted a few years, much longer than my previous CANON ones. Back then I was pleasantly surprised about the anti-shake mode. Though small, it is packed with many great features such as a wide angle, Leica lens and a recording rate of 30fps for movies. I hopefully will be able to post some new pictures for 2009 and selfmade videos on this site. Will blog later about my experience with this cool little gadget. The only downside is, that you will have to let your creative side on the side when it comes to manual settings. This is fine with me. I just wanted a compact, stop and shoot camera. And for that it totally fulfills its purpose and the best: it fits my budget too..>.<
Here are some cool facts about it:
- 9.0 Megapixels, 1/2.33″ CCD, up to 3,456 x 2,592 resolution JPEG, 1280 x 720 (30/15fps) QuickTime Motion JPEG
- SD Memory Card
- 3″ LCD
- 10x optical zoom
- Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens
- 10x Wide-angle Optical zoom and 4x Digital zoom lens
- F3.3 - F8.0 Wide, F4.9 - F11 Tele Aperture Range
- f=4.6-46mm (35mm equiv: 28-280mm) Focal Length
- 3.0″ Diagonal Polycrystalline TFT LCD Display (460K dots)
- Focusing Area Normal: Wide 50cm/Tele 200cm - infinity, Macro/Intelligent AUTO
Must have Wordpress plugins
Saturday, January 3rd, 2009![]()
I just noticed that I have somewhat neglected to blog about Wordpress in general. My navigation bar shows merely 4 entries. Hah! And since this is not the time to procrastinate, I thought I better share with you guys my personal favorite plugins ^^. Apart from being such an awesome blogger software, the community features a whole lot of plugins that you can use to tweak-up your site. I myself am using only a few that I have carefully picked.
Anyhow, here is a list of essential Wordpress plugins that, I believe, any serious Wordpress blogger should consider:
1. Askimet - The Ultimate Wordpress Antispam plugin
2. Contact Form with integrated Antimspam
3. All-In-One SEO - A plugin that optimizes your blog for Search Engines
4. Share this - Will allow your reader to share the content via a link with a friend via email
5. Instant WP Upgrade - This plugin allows you to easily upgrade your Wordpress
6. Photodropper - Allows you to use and embed your Flickr pictures
7. Easytube - Allows you to embed Youtube into your Wordpress site
8. Database backup - Allows you to backup your Wordpress database
Feel free to add any in the comment section!
Happy 2009!
Friday, January 2nd, 2009I hope you guys had a great new year. To start this year with something nice I decided to link to two nice Korean music videos that you may want to listen to as you please. The first one is sung by Byul and it shows an abstract of the movie 200 Pound beauty with Kim Ah Joong in the lead role. The other one is one of my Korean all time favorite singers Taeyon. She is one kind of a girl and her voice is just soo beautiful. Enjoy!
